With the “Spring Famine” in full swing, we are seeing more produce from up north in the boxes, and the Vic boxes are light on variety from week to week.
Its planting and prepping season rather than harvest season in the local parts, and we’re unlikely to see new season local produce until asparagus kicks off.
Still, the sunnier weather means leafy greens are growing; and brassicas like cauli, broccoli, cabbage and kohlrabi are all abundant and good value.
Meaning we’re able to get more in the boxes - about 10% more than last week - and will continue like this into summer.
So thanks for sticking with us through this period.
It’s all part of the experience of “eating with the seasons”.
Eat well,
Graham
PS. Choose from one of our box selection, and let us know your “no list”; or make one of your own by choosing the vegetables and fruit you prefer.

New season red WOMBOK CABBAGE will be our main feature for the week's Mixed Choice boxes.
Brassicas are of excellent value right now, and we are seeing a large drop in CAULIFLOWER and BROCCOLI prices compared to the last few weeks.
Which means this week there are 15 items in the large box compared to 13 last week - swings and roundabouts for Spring whilst we wait for the bumper Summer season to arrive.
Greens for the boxes will be SILVERBEET from Colac area, and lovely BABY COS LETTUCE from the Peninsula area.
Small FENNEL may also be big enough for harvest in time for this week's Vic boxes.
A little break in colder weather up north means more variety in produce arriving for the Mixed Choice boxes.
We should see some BULLHORN CAPSICUM and BEANS in the larger boxes. And skinless new season ONIONS will be back in the boxes after a long absence.
Vic boxes will have to be content with SPRING ONION from Mornington and LEEK from Colac.
Root veg is still the local staple with real value for KOHLRABI from Swan Hill and large biodynamic PARSNIP from Inverleigh.
New season biodynamic SWEDE kicked off last week, and looks excellent.
Fruit will be heavy on citrus with Swan Hill BLOOD ORANGE and Mildura NAVELS the pick.
Also ELLENDALE from up north and tart TANGELO from just side of the Murray are also great choices,
New varieties of APPLES from this week, with delicious BRAEBURN (old style) and sweet KALIE APPLES (like a cross between Pink Lady and Gala) are favourites.
