Week 47 - Sweet Corn, Tomato, Zucchini, Baby Cos, Peaches, Apricots and Nectartines

Week 47 - Sweet Corn, Tomato, Zucchini, Baby Cos, Peaches, Apricots and Nectartines

First week of Summer should see us tilt more to those salad vegies and away from brassicas and root veg. However, we still have a nice mix all the way through to Christmas.

And for fruit, it's looking to be a nice stone fruit season - the apricots, nectarines and peaches are all excellent early on, which is a great sign.

Local strawberries should be here soon too.

THIS WEEKS PRODUCE

We're seeing plenty of tomatoes arriving now! They're still coming from up north, but the local season is just around the corner. In the meantime, a small amount of Lebanese Cucumber is coming from Labertouche in Gippsland. We also have plenty of Zucchini from Mildura and the southeastern outskirts of Melbourne.

Capsicum still needs more time and sun; we currently only have the green variety.

Sweet Corn will feature in the boxes this week, sourced from a new grower up north. Expect nice, clean husked, good-sized cobs.

Broccoli from Pakenham and Cauliflower from Silvan will continue to be a staple until summer produce is in full swing. They offer excellent value right now—Cauliflower halves are just $3.90.

New season Cabbage from Nyah is also an excellent value at $4.60 for large-sized halves.

Parsnip and Sweet Potato return to the large boxes this week, though both items are starting to slow down for the season.

For greens, we have Baby Cos Lettuce from the Peninsula and a variety of "fancy" lettuces from Joe’s Garden in Melbourne, as well as fresh Spinach bunches from Pearcedale.

Fennel from Koo Wee Rup has been arriving as nice, clean bulbs and will be in the Victorian boxes this week. Snow Peas from Nyah and Broad Beans from Colac will also feature in the Victorian boxes.

For fruit, the biodynamic Apricots from Majestic Park have been eating nicely. The fruit in the boxes has been classed as "seconds" by the grower, meaning they may have a few skin marks, but the flavor is excellent.

For the Peaches, their smaller size makes them a great deal from the grower, and the yellow Nectarines from Swan Hill are also eating well. It is looking to be a very good season for stone fruit!

Next week, we should see Adam’s Strawberries from Bullarto start to arrive.
