What's in Season

This week the Mixed Choice will get a taste of Gippsland Artichokes (last week's recipe will be useful), and new season Purple Broccolini bunches.

It’s usually a slow time for produce in Spring - counterintuitive maybe, but growers are busy raising seedlings and planting rather than harvesting. Which is why it's always nice when we get something new at this time of year.

A bumper crop of Chinese Greens from Colac is coming through this week, and plenty of Baby Cos Lettuce and Asparagus from Mornington and Pakenham areas.

Spring continues with the asparagus and broad bean seasons kicking off, and early lebanese cucumber from Labertouche in Gippsland.

The difference in a week. For the Vic boxes, gone are the carrots, cabbage and swede, and in comes asparagus, broad beans, lebanese cucumber and baby cos lettuce. For the Mixed Choice boxes, we still get the choice of produce from up north so expect celery, onions, eggplant, bullhorn capsicum as well as a selection from Vic growers including fennel, broccoli, parsnip and cauliflower.

Citrus from the winter season is still happily with us, and this week we have all the varieties back with blood orange, tangelo and Afourer mandarins. Asparagus from Gippsland has arrived, and from up north sweet corn, snow peas and eggplant are our pick.

The weather may be starting to warm up, but the lag in the growing season means we’ll have root veg and brassicas for a while longer. Asparagus is on its way, more fennel is here, plenty of broccoli and local lettuce is just starting again. From up north, good value zucchini, eggplant, sweet potato and snow peas.

A little taste of summer in the boxes this week - with sweet corn, bullhorn capsicum and celery from up north. Vic boxes have a new harvest of kohlrabi and gold beetroot. And sooo much broccoli and cauliflower for brassica lovers.

A new variety of mandarin in Afourer to try this week. Plenty of citrus in the boxes, with tangelo, cara cara, navel oranges all making an appearance in one of the box selections.
